Marhaba from Istanbul

Marhaba (hello) from Turkey. Istanbul has treated me very well for week one of my trip with ieiMedia.
I’m here for a month, teaching visual journalism at Bahçeşehir University to 17 or so American journalism students which for many, this is their first international reporting trip.

Week one has been all about figuring out the various skill levels of the students, and introducing them to visual storytelling, and multimedia. They come from all kinds of different backgrounds from broadcast, to print, to photojournalism. They’re excited, and keen, and that’s all that really matters.

I had the chance to go out with one student this week as well, as we searched for a young Roma bride for her potential story. When we had thought we’d come across a wedding, it ended up being a circumcisum ceremony. Slightly different then expected, but a great experience and opportunity for Ashley, the student I was working with, to document real life in a Roma neighborhood.

My week started with lost luggage, a projector without an adapter, and the usual lost in translation type business that tends to happen when arriving anywhere to begin a program. More importantly however, it ended in dinner with old friends, and new ones, and with Tammy’s expected arrival in a few hours.

Another friend of ours will meet us at some point, arriving from South Africa, and my Canadian buddy will join us for a week around July 12th. Exciting times to come.

This city is after my heart. The food, the sounds, the culture, the people. I could live here very happily, and it’s the perfect hub for a journalist. We will be splitting our time between the accommodations provided for us in Ortaköy located on the european side of the Bosphorus and Galata, on the north side of the Golden Horn where a couple friends have offered us their amazing apartment, complete with a rooftop view of Istanbul.

More posts to come as our month long journey continues!
